A merchants' area, ideal for picking up bargain fabrics.

Many Jewish immigrants, mostly from Syria, settled n the area known as Once, part of the Balvanera neighbourbood, and the area is still sometimes known as the “barrio judío”, or Jewish quarter, although there are now also large Jewish communities in FloresAlmagro, Villa Urquiza and Belgrano. The Jews that settled in this area, traditionally worked in textile production and trading, so the area is packed with clothes, fabric and haberdashery stores, many of which offer wholesale prices, while accepting small purchases. This is the place to look for cheap clothes, buttons, fabric, and accessories. There are several syanagogues, in the area, as well as Jewish clubs and schools, and many options for breakfast::

Café Due

At Bartolomé Mitre 2202, this café is ideal for demanding palates when it comes to coffee.

Confitería la Antigua Bologna

At Av. Pueyrredón 563, this place is recommended for its pastries.

La Perla

This famous bar at Av. Rivadavia 2800, was a meeting place for artists and politicians in the 1920s. It was also here that Tanguito, the singer José Alberto Iglesias, composed the local rock hit “La Balsa”.

Tip:

Avoid visiting on the Jewish sabbath (Friday evening to Satarday night) because many businesses will be closed.

Take subte line H at Corrientes or Once station, and get off the train at Humberto 1º.
