Discover the city's thriving alternative theatre scene.

Present in tours

The city has a huge mainstream theatre circuit centred in and around Avenida Corrientes, but there's also a thriving alternative "off Corrientes" scene, particularly in the neighbourhoods of  Villa Crespo, Almagro and Boedo. Options in Villa Crespo include: Nün teatro-bar (Juan Ramírez de Velasco 419), with its bar-restaurant; Teatro el Perro (Bonpland 800); Espacio Sísmico (Lavalleja 960) and El Excéntrico de la 18º (Lerma 420). In Almagro: El camarín de las Musas (Mario Bravo 960), which has a nice restaurant; Elefante Club de Teatro (Guardia Vieja 4257), a recycled house with a romantic restaurant in the entrance; El portón de Sánchez (Sánchez de Bustamante 1034); La Carpintería (Jean Jaurès 858); Espacio Callejón (Humahuaca 3759); Elkafka (Lambaré 866); Abasto Social Club (Yatay 666) and La Lunares (Humahuaca 4027). In Boedo, you can visit Pan y Arte (Av. Boedo 876), with an authentic, economical restaurant; Timbre 4 (Av. Boedo 640) and Hasta Trilce (Maza 177). In San Telmo, there's the old Teatro Xirgu Espacio UNTREF (Chacabuco 975), which hosts interesting plays, concerts and projections, and in Balvanera there's Apacheta Sala/Estudio (Pasco 623), which has a good programme of performances.

Other options

Another option for alternative theatre is Grupo de Teatro Catalinas Sur (Benito Pérez Galdós 93), in its historic space in La Boca. There are shows for all the family. You can check the schedule online at (www.catalinasur.com.ar). In the same neighbourhood, you'll find P.O.P.A (Lamadrid 882), which hosts very vanguard, sometimes controversial events and exhibitions.
