If you're up for having fun, meeting peopel, and getting off the beaten track, the bars in the neighbourhoods of Villa Crespo and Almagro are a good bet. Café San Bernardo (Av. Corrientes 5436), is a legendary neighbourhood social club with pool and ping pong tables, and card games and board games to play with friends while you have a drink and a bite to eat. It's the ideal place to meet new people, or go in a large group. To drink, there are plenty of affordable wines, beers and classic mixers. To eat, pizza, empanadas, fries and more.

Another historic bar, open since 1884, and very "Buenos Aires", is El Boliche de Roberto (Bulnes 331). This intimate space is on the corner of Plaza Almagro and was formerly a neighbourhood tavern and store. There are tango show on Fridays and Saturdays. The place is attended by its owners, and the menu includes beers and cocktails in jugs. To eat, there are mixed platters, empanadas and pizzas. Old neighbourhoods often drop by in the evenings.
