At Avenida de Mayo 1222 this theatre was opened in 1908 by the city's Spanish community. It's first performance was a play by the great Spanish playwright Lope de Vega.
It has staged many Spanish writers’ works including the world premier of Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba in 1945, with Margarita Xirgú in the lead role.
The building suffered a fire in 1978 and was reopened in 1994 with a performance by the tenor Plácido Domingo.
