This site was the location of a hospital, then an early police station until the "peso fuerte" was established as currency in 1775 and the mint was created to print banknotes and postage stamps.
The current building, work of the engineer Eduardo Castilla, was inaugurated in 1881 and housed Argentina's national mint until 1944. The building has an Italian style with an iron and brick structure and a patio. It now belongs to the Argentine army and houses its general archive.
