Monument to Julio Argentino Roca

Equestrian statue by Uruguayan sculptor José Zorrilla de San Martín.

Julio Argentino Roca (1843-1914) was president of Argentina in two periods: from 1880 to 1886 and from 1898 to 1904. He'd previously been Minister of War during the presidency of Nicolás Avellaneda, during which time he led the "Conquest of the Desert" in Patagonia.

The bronze monument, the work of Uruguayan sculptor José Zorrilla de San Martín, is located in the avenue that bears Roca's name. It was inaugurated in 1941. The base features figures symbolising work and nation.
