Built in 1903 on a pier extending 500m into the Río de la Plata, the Club de Pescadores resembles a Belgian castle surrounded by sky and water.
The clubhouse on the city's northern riverside houses a restaurant, which naturally specialises in fish dishes and makes for a romantic setting on a moonlit night. There's also a large living room with a piano, a library and museum, and an aquarium with diverse species of fresh water fish.
The fishermen's club still exists - it had almost 2,000 members at last count - and runs a fishing school that is open to the public. The club also hosts concerts, which are open to non-members.
People can be seen fishing in the river near the club both during the day and at night, and the club is also a good vantage point from which to observe planes taking off and landing at the nearby Jorge Newbery Airport. The coast of Uruguay can be seen on a clear day.
Look out for the flag flying from a fishing rod.
