Located close to Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo, this monumentalist building is the headquarters of the Banco de la Nación.
The original building on the site housed the first incarnation of the Colón Theatre, between 1857 and 1888. It was chosen as the headquarters for Argentina's new national bank in 1891, at a time when the country was suffering a financial crisis. The bank was created with state capital to support agricultural producers through the crisis.
The current building with its stone facade, granite floors, and mahogany and cedar-panelled walls, was inaugurated in 1944 and was the work of the architect Alejandro Bustillo. Inside, you can visit the José Evaristo Uriburo Historical and Numismatic Museum. Entry is free.
