Antonio Ballvé Prison Museum

18th century retirement home for the clergy that later served as a prison.

This building designed by Italian architect Antonio Masella dates back to 1760. It was originally a retirement home for old priests belonging to a complex of jesuit-run institutions, then after the expulsion of the jesuits in 1767, it was used as a hospital, warehouse and a debtors' prison. Towards the end of the 19th century it was turned into a women's prison and served that function until 1974. correccional de mujeres, función que cumplió hasta 1974.

The penitenciary museum opened on the site in 1978 and exhibits uniforms, weapons, photographs and documents that tell the story of Argentina's prison system. Inside the complex, there is a chapel that dates back to 1734 (Nuestra Señora del Carmen), which conserves its original features.
