Have breakfast at the legendary El Imperio de la pizza (av. Corrientes 6895), a classic meeting point that's open 24 horas, Monday - Friday. They offer coffee and homemade medialunas, and you'll always find some interesting local characters here. From here, it's a short walk to Chacarita Cemetery (Av. Guzmán 680). Most tourists who come to Buenos Aires visit Recoleta Cemetery, the more aristocratic necropolis, but Chacarita Cemetery also boasts the remains of some important characters, including Carlos Gardel, the famous tango singer who died in a plane crash in 1935. There is a statue of him on the tomb, often with a cigarette in his hand and fresh flowers. Fans attend en masse every June 24, the date of Gardel's birthday, and sing some of his most famous songs.
The cemetery also houses the mausoleums of the armed forces, the police. Former president Juan Domingo Perón was also here until 1987, when his tomb was broken into. His body was later moved to another resting place.
Next to the cemetery, you'll find Parque los Andes, a park full of jacarandá trees that flower in spring and fill the area with purple blossom. Moving on, you can visit the Galpón (Av. Federico Lacroze 4171), an organic produce market open every Wednesday and Saturday beside the train line.
the restaurante at the Galpón market offers mate. Drinking mate is a traditional ritual in Argentina, and this is a good opporunity to try it.
