8. The Nereids fountain

A fountain that initially caused a scandal is now a highlight of the neighbourhood.

The Nereids Fountain is a white Carrara marble scultpure made by Lola Mora, one of Argentina's first female scultors. When it was inaugurated in 1903 it caused much scandal because of its naked female forms. It was originally intended for a prominent location in the Plaza de Mayo but was relocated out of the way in Puerto Madero because of the scandal - the authorities not knowing what the neighbourhood would become nearly a century later. The fountain comprises an enormous shell from which three tritons emerge with their horses. In the centre, two nereids hold a smaller shell on which sits a triumphant venus.
