Time to discover a place of mystery and legend

Present in tours

One of the city's must-see attractions, Recoleta Cemetery is a labyrinth of the dead and a place of stories and legends. The incredible architecture of the tombs and the importance of many of the people resting here lends death a picturesque, colonial atmosphere. Here lie the remains of Argentine presidents Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Bartolomé Mitre and Raúl Alfonsín, and other figures of great importance in Argentina's national history, such as Manuel Dorrego, Juan Bautista Alberdi and María Eva Duarte de Perón (Evita).

Evita's tomb is the most visited. The former first lady, wife of Juan Domingo Perón, lies embalmed eight metres beneath the marble tomb. Her body had been stolen and hidden in a cemetery in Italy following Argentina's military coup in 1955.
