El Globo

The mecca for a traditional Buenos Aires meat stew

El Globo is the mecca of the puchero meat stew - in fact, for many years this was the only dish this century-old restaurant served. Originally named Fernández y Fernández Bar & Billiards, in 1908, the name was changed to El Globo (the balloon) to commemorate regular customer and local dandy Jorge Newbery's crossing of the Rio de la Plata in an aerostatic balloon. Today, the restaurant features several references to Newbery, the founding father of aviation in Argentina, with photos, paintings and plaques, and, as well as the famous puchero, also serves excellent fish, seafood and rice dishes.
