Confitería del Hotel Castelar

Popular meeting place for cultural figures in the 20th century.

Present in tours

The classically sober and elegant cafe located inside Hotel Castelar, at Avenida de Mayo 1152, was one of the great cultural meeting places in the early 20th century, attracting figures like Carlos Gardel, Lola Membrives, Oliverio Girondo, Norah Lange, Ramón Gómez de la Serna Alfonsina Storni, Jorge Luis Borges and many more.

Perhaps most famously of all, the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca stayed in the hotel for six months while he was living in Buenos Aires between 1933 and 1934. Room 704 of the hotel is now a museum in memory of his stay.

The hotel and cafe maintain interior decor that speaks of the elegance and charm of this period, with marble, wood, bronze and glass ornamentation.
