A few steps on we cross from San Telmo into the neighbourhood of Monserrat, specifically the Bar del Filete (Defensa 219). Part of the Museo de la Ciudad (Museum of the City), the bar's walls display boards with fileteado designs by the collectors Esthel Barugel and her husband Nicolás Rubió. The couple organised an exhibition of fileteado art in the 1960s long before it became recognised as the iconic style of Buenos Aires that it's seen as today. A few blocks away is the famous cafe Café Tortoni (Avenida de Mayo 825), where visitors should look out for the fileteado designs on the cash register.
